Nomadic Sound Research founder David Gray holds a Masters of Fine Art in World Music from the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts), and a Bachelors of Music in Jazz Studies from Loyola University New Orleans. David is a drummer and multi-instrumentalist whose background producing and engineering music, coaching artists and performing has led to his involvement in several bands, projects and performances. David has been involved in numerous collaborations fusing everything from death metal, pop, world music, free jazz and traditional New Orleans music. His peers regared him as a supportive accompanist and a musical drummer. He has performed with recorded artists from Columbia, Wind Up and Capital records and is continuing to tour North American and Europe. On top of producing successful projects, he is continuing to coach and teach musicians that are shaping new musical landscapes.
Raised in southeast Texas, David's first musical experiences began at a young age when his mother would bring him to local venues to watch blues musicians perform. As David got older he started to perform himself. Playing with different bands around his hometown of Houston, thats when he realized that music was his calling. His music education started at the High School of the Performing and Visual Arts and led him to study drumming at Loyola University in New Orleans. Education is very important to David because of being raised in an unstructured alcoholic home with no education on either side of the family. Despite a learning disability and all the chaos of his troubled youth, David managed to get a master's degree and tour half the world with some well known musicians. The creation of his first company: Nomadic Sound Research Inc. will now allow him to be of service to the next generation of musicians and preserve the music that brought his dreams to reality. David says "There is something magical about performing, writing and recording music for others to experience, and I'd like to capture as much of that as I can. Music has truly saved my life, and given me and new found freedom". Currently residing in Toronto Canada, David is involved in many musical projects. On the local scene he is busy with teaching at York University and coaching electro hip hop artist One Hundred Magic Lions and folk artist Kevin Myles Wilson. He is also in pre-production with pop singer Keely Valentine and in post-production with spoken word artist Cregg Rondell of Boy Hits Car. Besides teaching and coaching under Nomadic Sound Research, David is currently recording drums for Bob Egan's (Blue Rodeo) solo project. David is also currently in his second year of his PhD in ethnomusicology. " I'm just trying to pass on what has been given to me" - David Gray
