At age 15, Davey started playing the drums with rock music in mind. To him at the time, the faster and louder the better. His first drumkit was an old beat up marching snare and six trash cans. He grew up in Sugar land, Texas. Once he started getting serious about playing drums he moved to New Orleans Louisiana to study at Loyola University. He learned how to improvise in all styles of music at Loyola. He then spent the next three years studying the physics of funk, the art of the laying it down and digesting soulful rhythms from some of the funkiest drummers on the planet. After graduating he moved to Los Angeles to earn a Master's in Fine Art from The California Institute of the Arts in African Music Studies. His free time was spent working in the music industry (Interscope Records and American Recordings) and touring North America and Europe. In 2007, he moved to Canada to complete a PhD in ethnomusicology and teach at York University.
